CCE Honors Students, Alumni, Staff, and Faculty with Award Ceremony

The College of Continuing Education [CCE] at Sacramento State celebrated the outstanding contributions of our staff, faculty, alumni, and students with an award ceremony on Friday, Nov. 8.

These remarkable individuals have not only furthered their education but have also significantly impacted our campus and our community. The honorees were:

  • Ryan Carleton, our Outstanding Student Honoree, embodies the spirit of perseverance. As a career changer and devoted parent of two young children, he has balanced family responsibilities with his education in the Paramedic Program. Ryan’s determination to succeed while navigating the challenges of parenthood showcases the incredible lengths individuals go to in pursuit of their dreams, inspiring those around him.
  • Cindy Echavarria, our Outstanding Alumni Honoree, exemplifies resilience and dedication. While balancing a full-time job, she pursued her Human Resources Management Certificate Program, showcasing her commitment to personal and professional growth. As a standout student, Cindy excelled academically and inspired her peers with her determination to succeed. Her journey reflects the transformative power of education and the support of our community in achieving one’s goals.
  • Dr. Ernest Uwazie, our Outstanding Educator Honoree, is a beacon of knowledge and leadership. Holding a BA and MA in Criminal Justice from St. Edward’s University, and a Ph.D. in Justice Studies from Arizona State University, he has dedicated his career to educating future leaders. As a Professor and Chair of Criminal Justice at California State University, Sacramento, Dr. Uwazie founded the Center for African Peace & Conflict Resolution, making a positive impact on communities both locally and globally. His extensive work in training individuals through over 100 ADR workshops speaks to his commitment to lifelong learning and community engagement.
  • Joni Valentin, our Outstanding Staff Honoree, is a proud alumna of Sac State, where she studied Art Studio with a focus on New Media Art. Since joining the team, she has excelled in her role and taken the initiative to train new employees, fostering a spirit of collaboration and support. Joni’s creativity and dedication to enhancing the experience for both students and staff reflect a commitment to success and growth within our community.

“As we honor these outstanding individuals today, let us remember that their achievements are a testament to the power of education and the strength of our community,” Dean Jenni Murphy said at the event. “Each of our honorees has shown what it means to strive for excellence, and they inspire us all to continue our own journeys of growth and learning.”

CCE has been offering courses, seminars and workshops since 1951. We remain committed to serving the community by enhancing lives through innovative education and professional development. The College of Continuing Education extends the mission of Sacramento State by providing access to educational and professional programming that meets learner and industry demands.
