Overview

The BS in Health Science is a flexible, fully online program designed to prepare students for a broad range of careers in healthcare. The curriculum integrates critical knowledge with real-world application across the biological, physical, and social sciences. With customizable electives and built-in prerequisites, students can pursue advanced studies (e.g., Nursing, PA School, Occupational Therapy), graduate education, or immediate career advancement.

Complete the Bachelor of Science in Health Science departmental application. The deadline to submit a departmental application for Fall 2026 is Saturday, Aug. 1, 2026.

Audience

This program is designed for students who:

  • Need a fully online modality to complete their BS in Health Science to accommodate work schedules, family obligations, or geographic barriers to traditional on-campus study
  • Have already completed lower-division coursework at a community college or university
  • Are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare
  • Are already working in healthcare and are seeking career advancement

Admission Requirements

  • Minimum 2.6 cumulative GPA
  • Minimum 45 CSU-transferable units
  • Completion of the following courses or equivalents with a C- or better:
    • Human Anatomy and Physiology Series (equivalent to BIO 25/26 or BIO 22/31 at Sacramento State).
    • General Chemistry (equivalent to CHEM 6A or CHEM 1A at Sacramento State)
  • Completion of two or more of the following General Education Subject Areas:
    • Subject Area 1A: English Composition
    • Subject Area 1B: Critical Thinking
    • Subject Area 1C: Oral Communication
    • Subject Area 2: Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning

Structure

The program will be structured in an accelerated 6-week schedule with two 6-week sessions per semester, allowing students to complete multiple courses per semester and finish their degree in a timely manner. This format is designed to accommodate the needs of working adults and those with other responsibilities, providing the opportunity for students to advance their education without sacrificing their current employment or personal commitments.

Required Major Coursework

There are 39 units of upper-division coursework required in Health Science with a “C-” grade or better. Those courses are:

  • HLTH 100: Intro to Health Science (3 units)
  • PUBH 114: Human Ecology and Health (3 units)
  • PUBH 122: Health Psychology (3 units)
  • Aging Course (3 units)
  • Ethical Practices Course (3 units)
  • Health Science Course (9 units)
  • Electives (15 units)

Plus, additional coursework to meet Sac State’s 120-unit graduation requirement.
