Robert Vega Arellanes, a former College of Continuing Education Dean, passed away on Jan. 5, 2025.

Best known as Bob to his family and friends, he lived a remarkable life defined by hard work, education, and service to both his country and community. Born on Sept. 20, 1933, in Yuma, Arizona, and raised in East Los Angeles, Bob’s early life was shaped by determination and strong work ethic. After enlisting in the U.S. Navy at 18, he went on to pursue higher education, eventually earning a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Oregon.

Bob’s professional journey spanned a variety of fields, but his most significant contributions were made during his tenure at California State University, Sacramento (Sac State), particularly within the College of Continuing Education (CCE). As Dean of Continuing Education, Bob played a pivotal role in expanding opportunities for non-traditional students, overseeing a variety of programs designed to make education accessible to a broader community. He also served as the Dean of Academic Planning, where he was instrumental in the introduction of a new statewide general education program.

Beyond his administrative duties, Bob’s work at Sac State included overseeing the establishment of the Air Force ROTC Detachment on campus and relocating the Army ROTC program to an on-campus facility. He also administered a graduate scholarship grant program for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, helping to create pathways for former Peace Corps members to continue their education. His leadership in these areas reflected his deep commitment to both education and service.

Bob’s passion for education and community extended beyond Sac State. He was actively involved in the soccer community, serving in various roles, including as chair of the California Soccer Association North, where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Bob’s legacy is marked not only by his professional achievements but also by the love and dedication he showed to his family. He leaves behind his wife Joanne, four children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom he was deeply proud of. His contributions to Sac State, the Peace Corps, and his community will be remembered by those who knew him and benefited from his work.
