Immersive Learning: CCE’s Faculty-Led Study Abroad Program
Oh, the places you’ll go with our Faculty-Led Study Abroad [FLSA] program.
At Sac Sate’s College of Continuing Education [CCE], we want students to experience a world beyond University Drive or Napa Hall.
This unique program provides students interested in studying abroad with an international experience. Students can have this experience without dedicating an entire semester abroad. As the name implies, these trips are led by Sacramento State faculty, who help infuse international, intercultural, and global dimensions into the student’s academic experience.
Senior program manager Alessandra McMorris says, “These programs appeal to alumni and community members who are seeking distinctive professional development opportunities… By immersing themselves in different cultures, students foster global awareness, cross-cultural competence, and adaptability—skills that are highly valued in today’s job market.”
This year alone, students are able to experience firsthand:
- Japan’s influence on architecture and design
- Italy’s ancient artifacts and monuments in museums and archaeological sites
- France during the La Muse Writer’s Retreat, studying the writing of an individual theorist, inspired by the beautiful scenery of the Occitanie Mountains
- Influential artists who came out of Mexico City, like Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and emerging contemporary artists
- A first-hand view of Costa Rica and Guatemala through the lens of health, risk prevention, and wellbeing
“Faculty-led programs also align closely with Sacramento State’s mission and imperatives by offering transformative educational experiences that prepare students to lead, serve, and succeed in a global context,” McMorris added. “These programs help attract and retain students, as study abroad participation is often linked to higher satisfaction and academic success. They also support our diversity and inclusion efforts by providing alternative opportunities for students who may not otherwise study abroad. Alumni engagement and potential funding opportunities further enhance institutional growth and visibility.”
The program is already planning exciting destinations for 2026. Next year, nursing students can look forward to visiting Japan or London, while students of Asian Studies can visit China.
