Firefighters pose with awards

Monday, Oct. 6, was no ordinary evening for Paramedic John Doughty.

A Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District first responder and former student in Sac State’s College of Continuing Education [CCE] Paramedic Program, John heroically jumped into action when a helicopter crashed along Highway 50

John and his partner worked alongside crews with the Sacramento Fire Department as they provided patient care and initiated rapid transport to UC Davis Medical Center.

For that bravery, John and his partner received Heroism Medals from the Sacramento Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution on May 19, 2026. In a Facebook post, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said that during transport, “the crew identified serious injuries and signs of inadequate oxygenation, immediately intervening while remaining calm, focused, and continuously monitoring the patient throughout the incident.

“Their composure, teamwork, clinical skill, and unwavering commitment to patient care reflect the highest standards of the fire service.”

Lisa Sander, Paramedic Clinical Coordinator at CCE, said that the helicopter crash sent shockwaves throughout the community, especially for her since she flew in that aircraft hundreds of times.

“Watching it crash was a nightmare for those of us who worked for REACH [Air Medical Services],” Lisa said. “While others watched in shock, John moved with instinct, determined to help. In a scene filled with uncertainty and heartbreak, he remained calm and steadfast, providing critical assistance when it mattered most. His unwavering bravery gave the flight crew member a fighting chance and ultimately saved her life.”

Three people were on board that helicopter when it crashed. A KCRA story reported that nurse Susan Smith, who was on board the helicopter, died days after the crash. Pilot Chad Millward and Paramedic Margaret Davis survived the crash.

“What could have ended in more unimaginable loss became a story of hope because of John’s courage, but I am not surprised since he was the kind of student who never backed away from a challenge,” Lisa said. “We are so proud of him and hope he continues to thrill at Metro Fire.”
