Second Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders

The program is designed for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in a discipline other than Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology or Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Students will complete 46 units in lecture, laboratory and clinical coursework in 16 months. This program is delivered in person on the Sacramento State campus.

Upon completion of the program, students will earn a Bachelor of Science and be eligible to apply for California Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) Licensure. Graduates may also apply to Sacramento State’s Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders program or any other Speech Pathology or Communication Disorders program for which this equivalency is accepted. Students who complete a portion of the courses plus prerequisite requirements are eligible to apply to the doctorate of audiology program in the first semester of the CSAD2B program.

Admission into programs leading to licensure and credentialing does not guarantee that students will obtain a license or credential. Licensure and credentialing requirements are set by agencies that are not controlled by or affiliated with the CSU and requirements can change at any time. For example, licensure or credentialing requirements can include evidence of the right to work in the United States (e.g., social security number or taxpayer identification number) or successfully passing a criminal background check. Students are responsible for determining whether they can meet licensure or credentialing requirements. The CSU will not refund tuition, fees, or any associated costs, to students who determine subsequently to admission that they cannot meet licensure or credentialing requirements. Prerequisite courses must be completed prior to starting the program. If you are in the process of completing some prerequisites, your official transcripts submitted with your application must show you are currently attempting the courses. These courses may be taken at another university, at a community college, or through the College of Continuing Education (if available) if the catalog descriptions are similar. The following prerequisite courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C- or better.

*Note: The physical and biological science courses must meet the general education requirements of the university attended. It is strongly recommended that students have completed a course in physics and/or chemistry as one or both will likely be required later on when applying to a master’s degree program and one or the other will be required for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) CCC for students who have completed a master’s degree. Students should consult with master’s degree programs to which they plan to apply and plan accordingly.

**Note If you have a course in child development, it needs to cover the entire lifespan (birth through death), In lieu of one course, a combination of a child development course and a course in gerontology may be accepted. Students are encouraged to reach out to the program manager to confirm the acceptability of prerequisite coursework.

Students will be notified of rolling admission decisions the semester prior to starting the program. For the Spring 2027 cohort, notification will be in Fall 2026.
