Getting around Sacramento
There are many ways to get around Sacramento. You may walk, bike, take a bus or commuter train, drive or carpool (share a ride).
Public Transportation: Sacramento’s bus and light rail system is called the Regional Transit (RT) system. ELI students may purchase a semester pass at a discounted price. Semester passes are good for a six (6) month period (January through June and/or July through December). The pass offers unlimited use of the city’s bus and light rail system.
Bicycle: If you live near campus you may want to ride a bike.
Campus Transportation: The university also has a campus bus service called the “Hornet Shuttle” that is free of charge to students. Please note this bus service only runs during the university’s fall and spring semesters.
Megabus: This low cost, daily express bus offers trips from Sacramento to San Francisco and Reno, Nevada. Visit the website for more information.
App-based Car Services: Popular app-based services like Uber and Lyft offer an alternative to taxis, often at a lower cost.
Zipcar: You can rent a Zipcar by the hour or for the day. This is great option for running errands or a special day trip where you will need a car. Zipcars are located in various parking lots throughout the city, including the Sacramento state campus. A valid international driver’s license is required, along with a passport. International driver permits are NOT accepted.
Rental Car: Most companies allow international students to rent a car with a valid international driver’s license and passport. Typically, you need to be at least 25 years of age.
Carpool: A “carpool” is when you ride in a car with two or more people. You can sign up with the Sacramento Region Commuter Club. This is a free service that helps you find other students, faculty or staff who want to share a ride to school. You can also carpool on weekend trips to nearby cities.
