‘Expanding Your Horizons’ Volunteer Shares Her Experience
The Expanding Your Horizons STEM conference is all about getting middle-school girls excited about math and science. The event celebrated its 11th year at Sacramento State in October 2017.
“Females are still far too underrepresented in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers,” said Teri Kier, from the nonprofit Women of AT&T, which sponsors the event. “If we can show girls that science isn’t just for boys and that math can be fun, perhaps they’ll take more classes in school that can prepare them for challenging and rewarding careers.”
Kier has volunteered at all 11 conferences, where girls have their choice of two dozen workshops like Doctor for the Day; It IS Rocket Science; and Biofuels, Soaps and Good Dirty Science.

The Women of AT&T partners with the College of Continuing Education and our Conference and Training Services (CTS) in planning the event. ”I can’t say enough about the thorough and prompt service we received from the CTS team. The facility scheduling and registration services are particularly valuable,” said Kier.
“Every year we have one or two new issues for which we need assistance. The CTS personnel always exceed our expectations. They address our needs in a positive manner, often providing us with well thought-out options. Hosting 400 young women along with 150 volunteers could be quite the planning nightmare, however, using the CTS services enables us to come across to the community and school groups as a well-organized conference host,” she added.
